Tough to Get Past Mr. Proud Allen
(Charles Town, WV) – West Virginia-bred Mr. Proud Allen headlines a field of nine two-year-olds heading to the gate in this Saturday night’s $100,000 Charles Town Juvenile.
Mr. Proud Allen, owned and trained by John Casey, comes into the Charles Town Juvenile off a win in the Mountaineer Juvenile on the West Virginia Derby undercard. He broke his maiden at first asking on June 27 with a 9 ¼ length victory against state-breds at Charles Town. Mr. Proud Allen breaks from post 2 under new rider Travis Dunkelberger.
If he’s to tack on the Charles Town Juvenile to his victory in the Mountaineer Juvenile, Mr. Proud Allen will have to beat a familiar foe in Unleash the Humor. Trained by Mark Shuman, Unleash the Humor finished third behind Mr. Proud Allen at Mountaineer after making a five-wide move that came up two lengths short. He’s since come back to run fourth in an optional claiming race at Delaware Park after being compromised by a poor start.
The winner of that same optional claimer at Delaware also comes back in the Charles Town Juvenile as Juan Vasquez saddles Star Zapper. Anna Napravnik has the mount. Vasquez and Napravnik also teamed up in the 2009 Charles Town Juvenile with Bellissima Luna, who went on to finish third behind Western Smoke.
Thewayitusedtobe who, besides Mr. Proud Allen, is the only other stakes winner in the field, breaks from the rail under jockey Felix Julio. Following a poor performance in the Bashford Manor (G3) at Churchill Downs, trainer Rafael Flores took the two-year-old son of Sunday Break up to Arlington where he broke his maiden on July 17 and followed that up with a win at Canterbury in the Brian Barenscheer Juvenile.
Casperzapper, Bandbox, Nimble Tiger, Go Marie Tu and Roman a Clef complete the lineup.
Post time for the first race at Charles Town on Saturday will be 6pm EST, with the seven furlong Charles Town Juvenile scheduled as the 9th race with a post time of 9:45pm EST.
