Posts Drawn, Fields Set For Charles Town Starter Tournament Quarterfinals

February 29, 2012

(Charles Town, WV) – Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races has drawn post positions and named riders for the upcoming Charles Town Starter Tournament, which gets underway with four quarterfinal races on Saturday, March 3rd.

Albrecht , trained by Daniel O’Ryan, the top seeded horse in the tournament drew post 3 with Charles Town’s leading jockey, J.D. Acosta, aboard for his quarterfinal race.  Acosta also figures to be riding one of the favorites in the first quarterfinal of the evening as he has the mount on Call of a Lion for trainer Charles Frock.  Despite drawing Post 10, Call of a Lion – one of two fillies in the tournament – will likely start closer to the rail with Awesome Rhythm and Big Boy Charlie unexpected to run.  That pair of defections would open the door for Forbes and Sea of Liquidity, currently numbers 11 and 12 on the also eligible list, to run.

All told, a total of 55 horses were entered for the Charles Town Starter Tournament. Saturday’s quarterfinal races are each worth $25,000 and run at 6 ½ furlongs, with the top five finishers in each going on to compete in the $30,000, 7 furlong semifinals on March 24th. The top five finishers in the semifinals will stretch out to 1 1/16 miles in the $55,000 championship on Charles Town Classic night, April 14th.

Having been awarded special event status by the West Virginia Racing Commission, all horses will run as uncoupled betting interests throughout the tournament, regardless of common ties in ownership or trainer.

Charles Town’s Saturday card kicks off with its normal 7:15pm first post with the first of the four quarterfinals scheduled as Race 5 at 9:07pm.
