2009 Charles Town Classic

April 18, 2009

$1,000,000* 4&up, 1 1/18 miles

Winner: Researcher
Owner: Rutledge Farm
Trainer: Jeff Runco
Jockey: Kendrick Carmouche

In its first running, the Charles Town Classic used a tiered purse structure, with Grade 1 winners running for $1,000,000 in purse money, Grade 2 winners competing for $750,000, Grade 3 victors for $600,000 and all others $500,000. Multiple Whitney Handicap winner Commentator was making his 2009 debut for trainer Nick Zito and was sent off as the solid 1.30-to-1 favorite. The race also drew the likes of 2008 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) winner Mast Track, San Antonio Handicap (G2) winner Magnum and multiple graded stakes winner Dry Martini.

Unlike his competitors, the name Researcher was not familiar to national racing fans going into the race. Stabled at Charles Town with leading trainer Jeff Runco, owner Hermen Greenberg purchased Researcher as a $5,000 charitable donation to Virginia Tech Foundation's M.A.R.E Center. Coming into the race off a track record performance at Charles Town just three weeks earlier, Researcher gave the home town crowd plenty to cheer about as he passed Commentator going into the far turn and drew off for a 2 ¼ length win. Darley Stables Ea closed to be second with Dry Martini third. Commentator, who would retire following an effort to win his third Whitney, finished fourth.
