2010 Charles Town Classic

April 17, 2010

$1,000,000 4&up, 1 1/18 miles

Winner: Researcher
Owner: Kinross Corporation
Trainer: Jeff Runco
Jockey: Luis A. Perez

The 2010 Charles Town Classic featured Researcher defending his title against a group including eventual Grade 1 winner Awesome Gem, as well as multiple graded stakes winner Redding Colliery and Understatement, from Todd Pletcher’s barn, who came into the race off a string of gaudy speed figures at Aqueduct.

One of the storylines emerging in the weeks prior to the race was the passing of Researcher’s owner Hermen Greenberg who had campaigned the horse throughout his career. The day before entries were taken, the sale of Researcher was announced with Zohar Ben-Dov’s Kinross Corporation assuming the gelding’s ownership from Greenberg’s Rutledge Farm. While the field and ownership connections changed, the result didn’t as Researcher made a move under jockey Luis Perez similar to his winning one in 2009 and pulled away to a 1 ¾ length triumph over Awesome Gem. It was another ¾’s of a length back to Redding Colliery in third.
