2015 Charles Town Classic

April 18, 2015

$1,500,000 (G2) 4&up, 1 1/18 miles

Winner: MORENO
Owner: Southern Equine Stables, LLC
Trainer: Eric Guillot
Jockey: Cornelio Velasquez

Coming off of a thrashing of California Chrome in the San Antonio (G2) and easy victory in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Shared Belief came into the 2015 Classic as the top rated horse in the Longines World’s Best Racehorse rankings.  As high profile as the eventual Charles Town Classic favorite was, his connections were equally worthy of the spotlight as the four-year-old was owned in part by sports talk show host Jim Rome, trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer and ridden by another Hall of Famer in Mike Smith.

With all eyes on the heavy 0.30-to-1 favorite, Shared Belief bobbled out of the gate and was eventually pulled up midway through the race.  The stunning development left Moreno, who had previously finished second to Shared Belief in the Big ‘Cap, as the one everyone was trying to catch and the third place finisher in the previous year’s Charles Town Classic didn’t disappoint.  After blowing by longshot Warrioroftheroses to grab the lead, the gelding trained by Eric Guillot and ridden by Cornelio Velasquez powered home to a commanding 2 length win over defending champion Imperative, stopping the clock in a track record time of 1:48.81.

Page McKenney rallied to be third behind Imperative, with Vyjack checking in fourth.

2015 marked the first Charles Town Classic card held during the day and fans responded by wagering a new single-card record of $4,847,106 on the 13 race program.  The Charles Town Classic itself drew $2,423,332 in wagers, which would make the single race the highest handling, non-Charles Town Classic card in track history on its own.
