Following the 2011 edition, the 2012 Charles Town Classic received an upgrade to Grade 2 status in just its fourth running and, much like the prior year, the entire starting gate on the Charles Town oval was occupied by graded stakes winners.
In addition to defending champion Duke of Mischief, the 2012 field was led by Tackleberry, fourth in the 2011 Charles Town Classic and the 1.90-to-1 favorite at post time, third place Santa Anita Handicap (G1) finisher Uh Oh Bango and 2011 Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Pants on Fire.
While Duke of Mischief once again made a bold move on the far turn and looked headed for a repeat, former claimer Caixa Eletronica passed the defending champ turning for home and drew off to a 3 length victory, giving trainer Todd Pletcher his first Charles Town Classic win. Pletcher had trained the beaten favorite in the previous two Charles Town Classics – Rule in 2011 and Understatement in 2010.
The 2012 Charles Town Classic shattered all existing pari-mutuel records for a single card and race at the track, with the program handling $3,441,632 and the Charles Town Classic itself generating more than $1 million in wagering.
